Much of the time spent planning websites at GOOP Digital’s Geelong SEO headquarters involves researching the words searchers use in Google to find clients’ products and services – keywords.
Many keywords are obvious and require little more than common sense. Looking for an SEO website developer in Geelong? Chances are you’d type “SEO websites Geelong” or “SEO website developers Geelong” into Google.
Other keywords are not so obvious. A little overweight and looking for a new outfit? You might search for clothes for curvy women. That’s right, “clothes for curvy women” is a keyword with high competition in Google. Research reveals there’s a high volume of searchers typing that keyword into Google, and any clothing retailer selling plus-size clothing would do well to have “clothes for curvy women” built into its website’s search engine optimisation.
As we said, there’s a lot of common sense involved in keyword selection but keywords are much more than just guesswork. We pay a small fortune for powerful research software that helps us dive deep into Google’s search results and the behaviour of online users, and then there’s the hours of analysis and assessment our SEO team puts into investigating and matching keywords with clients’ goods and services.
We work hard to match high-returning keywords with what our clients do, where they do it, and sometimes we work almost as hard convincing clients that what they think is a great keyword actually has no search value whatsoever. Sure, you can call yourself an “information creation and distribution agent” but what you really are is a copywriter. Nobody’s searching for information creation and distribution agents but there are plenty of searches online for copywriters.
Search Engine Optimisation is a blend of common sense, in-depth research and a whole stack of old-fashioned hard work. Reckon you’d be good at it? Here’s a chance to test your SEO skills.
Search marketing company BrightLocal has created an online SEO challenge, the Higher or Lower Keyword Game, which is open to anybody with an internet connection. Click this link to the Higher or Lower Keyword Game and see how you fare.
At the time of writing, GOOP Digital was leading the competition but there’ll probably be a new name at the top of the leaderboard by the time you get there. We don’t have time to sit and play all day boosting our score because SEO’s not a game to us, it’s serious work.
