Are you negotiating with somebody to write blogs for your website? Stop! Seriously. Stop and read this first.

Is your business in Geelong? Have you done a Google search for “SEO copywriters Geelong”?

Are you in Ballarat? Have you searched in Google for “Ballarat SEO-friendly copywriting”?

What about Bendigo? Did you type “SEO blogging and copywriting Bendigo” into Google’s search box?

Wherever you are, whoever you’re negotiating with to write your blogs, if copywriters aren’t prominent in Google searches for their services then you probably don’t want that person involved with your online publicity.

And if blog writers have approached your business offering services then it’s even more likely you don’t want to touch them with the proverbial barge pole. They’ve most likely cold-called because they’re not getting business from Google searches. They don’t really know what they’re doing and aren’t showing up in the search results.

If so-called SEO copywriters can’t get Google prominence for themselves, how on earth are they going to do it for your business? Unfortunately the copywriter’s SEO abilities are so dubious we can’t even find the writer’s business website when we type its name into Google. As for the blogs the writer has created for the clients’ websites? Well, they’re as good as invisible in online searches.

GOOP Digital applauds businesses heeding our advice to blog but please, please make your blogging worthwhile and rewarding rather than worthless and potentially damaging. Yes, damaging! Blogs can actually harm your website’s Google prominence, particularly when the blog “copywriter” has lifted text from other websites.

If you’re engaging somebody to write blogs for you make sure you do your homework, starting with the absolute basics. Do a Google search with relevant blogging-related keywords such as “Geelong SEO copywriters”. Whoever comes up in the top half-dozen organic results – not the paid ads – are the people you should be talking to. Avoid people who approach you touting their services.
