When it comes to getting your website found in Google for what your business does, where you do it, the little things really do matter! The fundamental thing you should be doing when writing blogs or pages for your website is to include keywords in headings and body text. Our recommendation is around two keyword mentions per 300 words for businesses in Australia (however this is not a hard and fast rule), anymore than this could be considered overkill and you may be penalised for keyword stuffing.

For example, if I wanted to increase my Google ranking for Goop Digital’s SEO copywriting service targeting Geelong, it would be a good idea for me to write a blog focusing on the keyword “SEO copywriting Geelong”.

Before writing content for your website you should have a list of keywords corresponding with your services that you will want to focus on, this keyword list should be based on search traffic data and your target market. If you’re a Goop Digital client you will already have a keyword list, along with your current Google ranking for every keyword as part of our Ongoing Optimisation service.

How high-quality linking can boost your Google rankings

When it comes to linking, ‘click here’ links are insufficient and provide little to no SEO benefit for your website. Links present fantastic opportunities to help give your Google rankings a boost – if done correctly. When it comes to linking it’s all about using SEO-relevant anchor text to link to a relevant page on your website.

For example, if i’m blogging about Goop Digital’s SEO copywriting service and my keyword focus was “SEO copywriting Geelong” it would provide considerable SEO benefit to include the keyword in the link.

I would also want to link the keyword to a relevant page on my website. For example, “our Geelong-based SEO copywriters help local businesses increase their website’s visibility in Google”, here I have linked the focus keyword to a relevant page on the website.

Don’t worry if the keyword isn’t written word-for-word, Google is smart enough to know what you’re trying to say. However, try to get as close as possible without compromising readability for the user.

Labelling your images

The term Search Engine Optimisation doesn’t purely refer to text. One of the ways businesses try to engage their customers on their website is through images. All of your images should be titled and have descriptive alt text so that they can assist your blog post or page in ranking in Google.

If your labels are particularly relevant, the images may also rank in Google image searches. If the images on your website were added by the Goop Digital team you can rest assured knowing that we add relevant image titles and alt text to all images we upload to our clients’ websites.

Now what should you do?

One thing that you could start doing is going over any content that you have written previously and adding more information, applying the tips mentioned above. Google loves fresh content, so the more relevant the content, the higher chance you have of ranking highly in Google searches.

Regularly updating your website ensures it always has relevant content and will allow your Google rankings to grow. The best way to do this is through blogging regularly – the benchmark should be at least once a month.
