Google’s move towards AI Max for Search campaigns is changing how some Google Ads campaigns are managed. We are keeping a close eye on these changes, reviewing accounts and testing the technology before making decisions about how, or whether, it should form part of our clients’ advertising strategies.

The important thing to know is that AI Max does not mean every Google Search campaign suddenly changed on 1 September 2026. Google began automatically upgrading certain eligible campaigns during September, specifically those already using campaign-level broad match or Automatically Created Assets. Google has also postponed the automatic migration of Dynamic Search Ads until February 2027.

AI Max for Search campaigns in Australia explained

AI Max is not a completely new type of Google Ads campaign. Instead, it is an additional optimisation layer that can sit within an existing Search campaign.

Put simply, it gives Google more freedom to use its AI technology to decide when an ad could appear, what messaging could be shown and which page of a website someone might be sent to.

The main features include search term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion. Search term matching can broaden the searches Google considers relevant to a campaign. Text customisation can create additional ad headlines and descriptions using information from existing ads and website content. Final URL expansion can select a different relevant page on the advertiser’s website when Google believes it may better match a person’s search.

AI Max represents a shift towards more automation within Search advertising.

Should your Search ads have AI Max?

Google’s direction is clear. It is continuing to build more automation and AI into its advertising products.

There may be useful opportunities within that technology. Google says AI Max can use more signals to find relevant searches, adjust ad copy and match users with suitable landing pages. It has also introduced controls around areas such as brands, locations and URLs.

However, greater automation also means giving Google more influence over decisions that have traditionally been closely managed by advertisers. For a business, the important question is not whether a feature contains AI. The question is whether it improves meaningful results.

More clicks are not automatically better clicks. More enquiries are only valuable when they are quality leads. Any change to targeting, ad messaging or landing pages needs to be considered alongside conversion quality, advertising spend and the actual goals of the business.

How GOOP Digital is approaching AI Max

We are aware of the change and actively monitoring how it develops. We are also testing AI Max so we can understand how it behaves in real campaigns and assess the quality of the results it produces.

We are not recommending that clients simply switch everything over to AI Max because it is Google’s newest option.

Our approach to Google Ads has always been based on objective data rather than adopting features for the sake of it. AI Max should be treated the same way.

Testing allows us to look beyond Google’s headline claims and assess what matters to individual businesses. That includes the search terms being triggered, the quality of leads, the pages receiving traffic, conversion performance and how effectively advertising budgets are being used.

AI Max may prove useful in particular circumstances. However, it may also make less sense for campaigns where tighter control over targeting, messaging or landing pages is important. There is no reason to assume one approach will suit every business.

For now, our focus is straightforward. We know that Google is implementing more AI, so we are keeping up with these changes and testing the technology carefully.
