WordPress WordCamp in Brisbane

01.06.2015

Our senior WordPress web developer was in Brisbane over the weekend, attending sessions at Brisbane’s WordCamp. WordCamp is a not-for-profit event run by volunteers who are passionate about all things related to WordPress website development.

From sessions on SEO and design, to plugins and audience behaviour… a wide and wonderful variety of topics were on offer for WordPress enthusiasts, developers and tech-business owners alike.

On Saturday our developer attended sessions in Creative SEO, a WooCommerce Case Study, Plugin Development and more.

Creative SEO was presented by Dan Petrovic, a renowned Australian SEO expert and business director. Dan spoke about tracking Google’s algorithm, “outrageously different tactics” for SEO, large-scale research and “link-building for suckers”.

Plugin Development was led by Wil Brown, a professional web developer and past WordCamp presenter and organiser. He spoke about lots of technical stuff and gave examples of things you can do with plugins to extend WordPress.

Sunday’s sessions included Make WordPress Accessible, Modern Design: Browser, Mobile and Data-Centric, and more!

The Make WordPress Accessible session was presented by Charlie Carter, the founder and director of a web consulting firm in Brisbane. Charlie spoke about WordPress Accessibility plugins, colour contrast, captioning and more.

Twenty-two-year-old Lucy Bloomfield headed the Modern Design presentation, talking about in-browser design, putting mobile first, rapid prototyping and much more. Lucy is all about the user experience (UX) which is incredibly important in the world of web design.

Saturday’s sessions packed a bit more of a punch but the entire weekend was well worthwhile. We also had our eyes peeled for potential developers to fill our in-house developer position in Geelong, Victoria.
